Turn on the extension. Then test a real tap.
Safari to Maps is a Safari Web Extension. The container app is a checklist. Handoff happens in Safari after you turn the extension on.
-
01
Find Safari to Maps
Open Safari extension settings from the app, or go to Safari Extensions in Settings / Safari settings on Mac.
-
02
Allow the extension
Turn Safari to Maps on. iOS and iPadOS 26.2 or later, and macOS, let the app read the switch. On iOS and iPadOS 18–26.1, the app asks you to verify in Safari instead of pretending the extension is off.
-
03
Allow All Websites
Safari shows one All Websites permission. Set it to Allow. Ordinary pages are not scanned in advance. After you tap a supported Google Maps link, that URL and nearby or structured place details are checked on the device. Supported Google Search pages add place controls.
-
04
Verify when the app asks
On iOS or iPadOS 18–26.1, open the product test page and tap Apple Park. Opening the page can confirm that the extension responded, but Apple Maps opening is the end-to-end pass.
Test on older iOS or iPadOS
The app shows this step only where the system cannot report the extension switch. The test page contains direct place and route links with no tracking or scripted redirect.
If Google Maps still opens
Confirm the extension is on and All Websites is Allow, then retry. If the Google Maps app is installed, it can take the tap through universal links. You do not need to uninstall Google Maps. Use Safari, and retry the same tap.
Short links such as maps.app.goo.gl, JavaScript-only buttons, iframe or Shadow DOM clicks, and the Google Maps website itself are out of scope. Those keep Safari’s normal behavior.
